Southampton Holocaust and Genocide Memorial Day 2016

Southampton will be marking the UK's national Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) with a commemorative event organised by Southampton Solent University and the Parkes Institute for the Study of Jewish/non-Jewish Relations, University of Southampton.

The free event will take place at Sir James Matthews Building, Above Bar Street, Southampton Solent University on Wednesday 27 January 2016 at 6pm (doors open at 5:30pm).  The event is non-ticketed and all are welcome to attend.

The Memorial Day is dedicated to the remembrance of victims who were persecuted as a result of genocide and discusses the discriminatory issues which society faces today.

This year, the theme of HMD is 'Don't Stand By'.  The Holocaust Memorial Day Trust are calling for us to consider our individual responsibilities not to be bystanders to hate crime and prejudice, nor to international threats of genocide.

Guest speakers at the event are Holocaust survivors Harry Grenville and Walter Kammerling.  The evening will also feature music, reflective pieces from local sixth form students, and performance from Southampton Solent University BA (Hons) Performance students.

Refreshments will be available directly after the event when guests will have the opportunity to talk with the speakers before receiving Holocaust Memorial Day Trust literature and a memorial candle.  There will also be an opportunity to view an accompanying exhibition.
