The 8th annual Ethical Challenges Lecture. Part of the School of Humanities annual series of lectures.
Against Marriage
Many states have recently expanded their definition of marriage to allow marriage between same-sex couples: a welcome move towards equality, but does this go far enough? Clare Chambers argues for a more extreme position: that the state should not recognise marriage at all. State recognition of marriage, she will argue, is a violation of both equality and liberty – no matter how marriage is redefined. She will also set out an alternative model for regulating personal relationships.
This year's lecture will be given by Dr Clare Chambers who is Reader in Political Philosophy and Fellow of Jesus College, University of Cambridge. Her main interests are: contemporary feminist theory (including marriage and personal relationships, the body, beauty and appearance, and liberal and radical feminism), contemporary liberal theory (including equality, autonomy, multiculturalism, and Rawlsian theory), and theories of social construction (including feminist and post-structural philosophy). Before joining the Faculty of Philosophy at Cambridge in 2006, Clare was Mary Somerville Junior Research Fellow at Somerville College, Oxford, and, before that, Lecturer in Political Theory at the London School of Economics.
In association with the Southampton Ethics Centre and kindly sponsored by the Royal Institute of Philosophy. This lecture will be chaired by Professor Alex Neill , Vice-President (Education).
Please note the closing date for booking is 1pm on Monday 29 April 2019.
