Event details
A seminar organised by the Southampton Ethics Centre
I explore a thought experiment where humanity faces unavoidable extinction two hundred years from now. I ask how philosophers in this ending world might reimagine current debates about the meaning of life, the relative value of virtual and real environments, the permissibility of procreation, the relative merits of various forms of utilitarianism, and the credibility of traditional arguments for and against the existence of God. I argue that reflection on the ending world raises troubling questions for contemporary philosophers, and our relationship with future people.
