The Government’s recent announcement regarding easing lockdown means that we are facing another month of lockdown. Sadly, this means Sport and Wellbeing facilities will not be reopening yet. But it is not all doom and gloom! We still have our excellent programme of daily fitness classes via Facebook live and we will be continuing to run our Personal Motivation sessions for Student members. In addition to this our Be Active programme will be launching its New virtual programme which is open to all students. For more information on this, read on!

Personal Motivation
Students are loving our virtual Personal Motivation sessions via Microsoft Teams. Here’s what student Zeina had to say about her recent sessions.

‘I am benefitting from this fantastic and generous offer provided by Uni to student to help us stay active and boost our mood. I have been very fortunate to take these amazing sessions with Adam and George. As I sit all day on my desk, Adam focuses on my posture which is desperately needed and George helps with strength training. Thank you to Sports & Wellbeing and thank you delta for being there for us when we desperately need the support in those difficult times.’

And it’s not just you who enjoys the sessions, we love them too. Experienced instructors Gabe and Stevie say

‘I've really enjoyed coaching students during the difficult time both helping with them with their physical health as well as fundamentals for better mental health.’
‘It has been extremely self-gratifying to be able to help people during the pandemic by supporting them with their health and fitness goals, and to know that this will also go a long way in supporting their mental wellbeing is of course a fantastic feeling’

To book your one to one session, log on to your online account or go to our UoS Sport app. Once you have booked on, please fill out the online form provided in the booking description which will inform our team member of your needs and help them to prepare for your session.

Be Active

Sport and Wellbeing’s Be Active programme will be offering sessions virtually at least 3 times a week starting tomorrow and moving into February. This programme provides students with an exciting means of getting involved with new sports and activities without fees or pressure of commitment. Virtual Table Tennis, Virtual Boxing, Virtual Badminton and Virtual Surfing sessions will all be conducted via Microsoft Teams. In addition to this there will be a fun scavenger hunt every Sunday!

Taking an hour’s break from your studies could go a long way to helping your wellbeing. To take part, all you will need to do is book your session via this link.

For February, why not take part in our ‘Strong as Ox’ challenge? For more information, head to the Be Active Facebook page.

Don’t forget we also have our Be Active Run Club via Strava! If you are unfamiliar with the service, Strava is an app which offers a multitude of benefits to runners of all levels of experience, tracking your time, distance, routes, allowing you to create challenges for yourself, and facilitating communication between other like-minded individuals. The Be Active Run Club invites experienced and aspiring runners alike to take part. We will be hosting regular challenges and competitions over the coming weeks, including prize giveaways. Sign up and enjoy!

We have also received some great feedback for our new inclusive Be Active programme and for our Be Active Activator Phil K, we hope that all attendees pass on the message about this great offering.

Your Active Story – Share your journey to fitness

Do you have a fitness story you’d love to share? How have you been exercising each day? How have you adapted your usual non-lockdown workout routine? We’d love to hear about it and if we publish yours then you win a water bottle and a pair of wireless earphones, perfect for your fitness journey.

To take part, just email your story to sportandwellbeing@soton.ac.uk and include a photo of yourself that you would like attached to your article. If your story is successfully chosen, we will get in touch.

Virtual Classes

As before, Sport and Wellbeing continues to promote home-based activity through the presence of regular, scheduled virtual fitness classes. We provide a range of fitness classes, from Latin Fusion, to Pilates, to Functional Fitness, all presented by members of our team. These classes are completely free and hosted on our Facebook social media page. There is no pre-requisite to book, all we ask is that you get yourself ready before the session begins and join in as you feel comfortable.

If, for any reason, you find yourself missing out on a session then there are still ways to get involved. All classes will be uploaded onto our Sport and Wellbeing YouTube account shortly after their initial streaming. Alternatively, you can access them via the UoS Sport app, where they can be access through the Fitness on Demand tile. These can be viewed entirely at your leisure, providing you with the opportunity to fit your workout around your lifestyle, all while staying in the comfort of your own home.

Lastly, please remember to follow the current UK Government advice, outdoor exercise is still permitted, though should be limited to just once per day. Exercise should not be conducted outside of your local area.

Stay safe, stay fit and we look forward to seeing you at one of our virtual offerings soon!
