Watersports for children

It is official, Watersports activities are not just for Adults - Sport and Wellbeing are able to offer a range of Watersports courses for Children from the age of 8 years old too.

The RYA Youth sailing scheme courses are offered by Sport and Wellbeing and many courses are run as part of our Summer camps.  The Youth scheme is available for children under 16 years of age.

There are four stages to the Youth Beginners courses and then you may progress onto the adult Level 3 modules.  The Youth Beginners courses are:

  • Stage 1 - A basic understanding of how a boat sails with some experience of steering and handling the boat.
  • Stage 2 - A range of skills and knowledge to help in becoming a confident sailor.
  • Stage 3 - Rigging, Launching and sailing in any direction.  Equivalent to Level 2 in the National Sailing Scheme.
  • Stage 4 - Sail a double handed boat as crew or helm, and solve a variety of problems afloat.

Children should be dropped off and collected from the University Watersports Centre, Mead Crescent (off Oliver road).  Drop off is available from 09:15 and collection should not be later than 17:00.
