The Southampton Respiratory Imaging group were recently awarded just over £12,000 in the form an EPSRC 'Bridging the Gap' grant to look at linking the material properties of the micro-structure of the lung with clinical lung imaging techniques. We will work closely with the mu-Vis micro-CT imaging facility at the University of Southampton to look at how micro-CT scans of lung tissue samples compare to the images obtained using a regular, clinical CT machine. In particular, we are interested in whether clinical measures of diseases such as emphysema can be correlated with the destruction of the small airways and vessels, as measured by micro-CT.
