Title: Near extremal black holes: from M87 to strange metals

Abstract: Recent progress in holographic dualities leads to the remarkable conclusion that fast spinning black holes, such as the supermassive black hole at the center of the neighboring galaxy M87, and the phase of high temperature superconductors above the critical temperature known as strange metal phase share the same qualitative physics. I will discuss the symmetries and effective dynamics of near extremal black holes and their connections with the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model and strange metals.
