CAS Guidance for Staff

Tier 4 Overview

Since 2010, all students applying for a Tier 4 visa from both within the UK and overseas require a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS). Each CAS is unique and is issued to a student by the University as their Sponsor. The CAS is not a document but a unique reference number and is frequently known as the CAS number. The CAS is transmitted to the student by email in the form of a statement which includes other information that the University has transmitted to the UKVI.

As the student’s Sponsor, the University makes a statement to the UK Visas and Immigration Service (UKVI) describing the students’ suitability for their course of study and lists the evidence which they have used to determine this. This information is recorded in Banner and uploaded centrally to the UKVI on a daily basis. The UKVI allocate the CAS which is recorded in Banner and then issued to the student by email.

Students cannot apply for a Tier 4 visa without having a valid CAS. In addition to the CAS, students must also provide the UKVI with evidence that they hold sufficient funds to cover the course fees and monthly living costs for up to one year. This figure is set by the UKVI.

Visa and Immigration Student Advice Service (VISAS)

Visa Guidance: All immigration and visa enquiries should be directed to our Visa Guidance Team (visa@soton.ac.uk); these are the only members of staff at the University who are legally permitted to give advice in these areas. Students can make an appointment to see the team at Student Services Centre.

Generating a CAS

CAS are generated centrally by the CAS team who are locating in Building 37, Room 2035.  For full guidance on the process for raising CAS, please contact the team for a handbook.  Information about a student's CAS can be found in the SKAICAS screen in the Student Administration System (Banner).

Key notes:

Joint CAS

Usually a CAS can only be issued for one course of study. A Joint CAS however is issued for the study of both a pre-sessional and substantive, or main, programme of degree study. A Joint CAS can only be issued if a student is 'unconditional firm' or 'unconditional accept' on their substantive programme of study.

Exchanging Information with the UKVI

The CAS Team exchange information with the UKVI each working day through the UKVI online Sponsorship Management System (SMS).
