Supporting a student living at home

A number of our students decide to continue living at home while they are studying, and below we've provided some helpful information for parents and supporters to help their student adjust to university life and have a great student experience.

Top tips to support a student who is living at home

Living with a student can be a very different experience. Here are some ways you can help you student find their stride while at University.

On Campus Facilities

Microwaves

If your student is hoping to heat up their lunch then they can use one of the microwaves dotted around campus. The University's online campus maps can be used to find microwaves across all of our campuses.

Library Laptop Loans

If your student wants to study while on campus and would rather leave their laptop at home, they can loan a laptop in Hartley Library.

Travel to campus

Find out more information about buses, rail and cycling routes and help your student figure out the best option for their commute

Travelling to campus

Helping your student plan their journey to and from campus will make their commute that little bit easier. There are plenty of discounts your student may be able to access to reduce their travel costs.

The Unilink Bus service connects all of the campuses in Southampton, and also runs from Southampton Train Station. Discounted prices are available for annual bus passes by visiting the Unilink office on Highfield Campus or buying online.

If your student is studying at Winchester School of Art, the University operates a free shuttle bus service, connecting Highfield Campus and WSA. Your student will need to present their student ID card to travel.

Full-time students are eligible for a 16-25 railcard, which can save up to a 1/3 on train fare. If your student is a mature student, they are still eligible for the railcard - they'll need to visit their student office who will complete their mature student declaration form.

If your student cycles, there are a number of cycle stores available at all of our sites. Access to the cycle stores can be added to your student's ID card by visiting the Unilink office and costs £10 for the year.
