Students at the University of Southampton may be eligible for an 18+ Student Oyster photocard if they either live at a London address during term time, or are on a mandatory work placement in London.

The scheme is managed by Transport for London.

Eligibility Criteria

The University of Southampton is only able to grant the photocards to students who either live in London during term time or who are on a mandatory work placement in London.

The full eligibility criteria is available on the TfL website.

Students who live in London

TfL's eligibility criteria states that the placement must be for a minimum of 14 weeks and must be a mandatory part of your course. If you are on a mandatory work placement in London please contact your student office and ask them to confirm the following to Transport for London:

Frequently Asked Questions

Although I am living in Southampton/Winchester, my home address is in London and I return home regularly. Will I be considered eligible?

No. You must be living in London during term time. Living in Southampton or Winchester but returning to London on weekends or holidays will not make you eligible for the scheme.

I am living in London, studying-part time and regularly travel to Southampton/ Winchester. Will I be considered eligible?

Only if you are also receiving money from NHS Bursaries or financial help from the University of Southampton as part of the Higher Educational Council for England (HEFCE) discretionary additional support.

I previously had a 16+ Zip Oyster photocard, surely this means I will be considered eligible?

No, the eligibility criteria for the two schemes are different.

Why is the University not supporting my application?

The University's role in the application process is to check that you are a registered student with a London term time address and then verify that information to TfL. We do not set the eligibility criteria and the scheme is managed by Transport for London.
