Additional Funding Opportunities

The University of Southampton offers a range of additional funding to enhance your University experience and support you throughout your time here. Keep an eye on this page for details of the funds as they open.

Technology Grant

The University is providing a discretionary grant to help students who are unable to access the technology they need to successfully engage with their course.

Eligibility criteria 

Currently enrolled and attending University and one or more of the following:

Criteria

Evidence
Household income of £42,600 Evidenced by your most recent Student Finance assessment (BM5/BM6 students in year 5 or 6 may be eligible based on their last assessment); supporting documentation not required, but household income must have been shared with the University prior to your Technology Grant application
Care leaver/Estranged student Evidenced by receipt of the Care leaver/Estranged student bursary; supporting documentation not required
Young Carer Evidenced by a letter of support from a young carer’s project/school or college/appropriate profession or receipt of Carer’s Allowance
Universal Credit recipient Evidenced by your most recent UC statement
Student Support Fund recipient during the 2021/22 or 2022/23 academic year (excluding awards made for funding delays) Supporting documentation not required

Students who are in receipt of the £200 Disability Support Allowance are not eligible for the Technology Grant if they have previously received funding for computer equipment through DSA but should speak with the Disability & Inclusion Team about their technology needs.  
 
If you do not meet the eligibility criteria but are struggling financially, you may want to consider applying to the Student Support Fund for cost of living support.  
 
Set contribution 


You may request one or more items of hardware or software in your application. The Technology Fund provides a set contribution towards each item with a maximum award of £300. Funds are limited, so please think carefully about which item(s) is a priority and also consider fixing your existing equipment, which might be possible at a local repair cafe
 
Laptop/Desktop (incl iPads): £200 
Monitor: £75 
Headphones: £50 
Mouse: £20 
Keyboard: £20   
Internet access equipment: £50  
Software (course-related and unavailable from University): £100 
Miscellaneous hardware: up to £21 
 
Application process 


If you meet the eligibility criteria, please complete the application form. Supporting documentation may be required. Priority will be given to those students who have not previously received an Online Learning Grant. 
 
You will receive an outcome within 10 working days of submitting your information.  
 
All awards are made at the discretion of the University. If successful, you may be required to provide receipts for the items you requested. If your application is unsuccessful, the outcome may not be appealed; however you would be eligible to apply to the Student Support Fund.

Health & Wellbeing Fund

The University is providing a discretionary grant to help students with health costs, which cannot be reasonably addressed by the NHS or University health services, and are necessary to engage with their course.

Eligibility criteria

Currently enrolled (if you are suspended due to illness, you may still be eligible) and one or more of the following:

If you do not meet the eligibility criteria but are struggling financially, you may want to consider applying to the Student Support Fund for cost of living support as this is a much more comprehensive assessment which looks over the whole academic year.
 
Set contribution 

You may request one of the following in your application. If you have additional Health & Wellbeing needs, you may be able to make another application later in the year depending on Fund availability. If you have multiple health needs, it may be more beneficial to apply to the Student Support Fund, so an advisor can review your circumstances in full. 
 
Dentistry: up to £215 

Medical costs: up to £500 

Glasses: £100

Therapy: We will fund up to a maximum of 6 sessions at £75 (£450 in total). Students must meet at least one of the above criteria and have engaged with the University Wellbeing team prior to applying.

Heating: £234 (limited to students with a recognised disability which requires additional heating, parents and carers as described above) 

 
Application process 

If you meet the eligibility criteria, please complete the application form. Supporting documentation may be required. Funding is limited; if we are oversubscribed, then we will prioritise based on individual need. 
 
You will receive an outcome within 10 working days of submitting your information.  
 
All awards are made at the discretion of the University. If successful, you may be required to provide receipts for the item you requested. If your application is unsuccessful, the outcome may not be appealed; however you would be eligible to apply to the Student Support Fund.  

Roy Queree Expedition Request

This bequest may be used to support undergraduate or postgraduate students currently registered at the University of Southampton who wish to participate, either individually or as part of a group in expeditions. To be eligible to apply students must be able to demonstrate that they are undertaking an organized journey with a specific and clear objective. It should be challenging and at a location away from an urbanized and modern settlement (such as a town or city)

The bequest cannot be used to support participation in fieldwork or in medical electives. There is a limited amount of money available. Applications are welcomed from any students who are planning on undertaking an expedition and meet the required criteria. Eligible students are email stufunds@soton.ac.uk and request an application form. Please ensure you complete the application as fully as possible and provide all the supporting documentation required.

All students will be notified by email whether they are successful or not.  

 

 

Santander Summer Opportunities Fund

The Santander Summer Opportunities Fund provides support of up to £750 to students who would like to carry out a summer activity related to their degree and whose yearly household income is under £42,600.

The fund is currently closed but will open again later in the year. Keep an eye on this page for more details!
