Students with Caring Responsibilities

The University of Southampton recognises that students with caring responsibilities may find balancing these with their academic studies challenging. These commitments might also impact their physical and mental health, financial situation, relationships, and general student life. In recognition of this, the University offers a range of support which Student Parents and Young Carers/Student Carers can access.

Student Parents

For those who are the main care provider for their child, further information on the support available to Student Parents can be found on our dedicated webpage here

Student Carers

At the University of Southampton, we define a Student Carer as a student who provides unpaid care, for a family member or friend with an illness, disability, mental health condition, or addiction. Some students may not regard or recognise themselves as being a carer. We also recognise that such individuals might also be referred to as a young carer or young adult carer.

The help and assistance provided by Student Carers can vary significantly. A caring role might only be a short-term commitment, like supporting someone recovering from an accident, or it could be an ongoing, long-term responsibility such as caring for someone who has a chronic illness or a disability. A student may be classed as a carer if they do any of the following for a parent, grandparent, sibling or friend by:

Support Available

Prospective Students

The University of Southampton offers a range of support for young carers who are considering attending higher education. This includes:

  • LifeLab Summer School: Bursary places available for young carers in Years 9, 10 and 11 on our two day medicine summer school.
  • Experience University of Southampton Residential: A 4-day, 3-night residential for individuals studying in Year 12 or Level 3 (Year 1)
  • Ignite Your Journey: Our dedicated transition programme for individuals in Year 13 from groups under-represented in higher education.
  • Travel Bursary: We understand that travel costs can be a barrier when invited to attend a University event as a prospective student. We would like to offer you a travel bursary of up to £100 to help cover these costs.
To be eligible for this bursary you must firstly have been invited to attend either 1 of our 5 Applicant offer holder days, Interview selection days or booked on to attend one of our Open Days. Further you must also meet 1 of the 6 widening participation criteria. Being a Young Carer doesn't automatically make you eligible for the Travel Bursary but you might still be eligible to receive this if you meet other eligibility criteria. Find out more here.
