Past Projects
Here you can find out more about projects we have been working on at the University.
The Transition Project was initiated by the Pro Vice-Chancellor Education, Professor Debra Humphris in discussion with the Students' Union in 2008-2009. It aims to address the initial transition students have to make in living and learning as they start a programme of study at the University of Southampton.
The need for this work arises as a response to increases in the diversity and expectations of our student body.
At undergraduate level, changes in the way we need to support students are driven by growing student numbers and by the widening differences in educational and social culture between school and university. The increased tuition fees being introduced in 2012 are going to present further challenges in regard to meeting students' expectations.
At postgraduate level, changes in the style of learning and the reduced level of structure compared to the undergraduate experience require students to adapt significantly in order to perform well in their studies. However the time available for such adaptation is particularly short for PGT students, as they need to settle into their studies as soon as possible.
The student transition period is defined as the period between when a student accepts a firm place at the University and the end of Semester 1 (or 6 months after registration for non-semesterised programmes).
The Project reports to Education and Student Experience Advisory Group in May each year.
Below are some links to more information about some of the initiatives that have been accomplished over the last year and the issues that they have sought to address. You can also find out about future initiatives and how to go about receiving financial and project team support for any ideas you may have that you would like to implement.
