New Management and Engineering and the Environment Peer Advisors

Published: 9 September 2011

The two Faculty of Engineering and the Environment Peer Advisors for PGTs - Yue Wu and Fazil Ahmed have been appointed with funding from the Transition to Living and Learning Project. Both are 2010-11 international Masters students and their contracts will be for about 3 months starting 19th September. Following last year successful pilot, Management has decided to provide full funding to continue the Peer Advisors scheme also this year and Nora Zhanh and Bhader Iqbal, both Management international Masters students from 2010-11, have been appointed on a part-time basis and will be in post from the 21st of September.

The main purposes for these roles will be to aid communication, provide signposting to information and support, organise social events to foster a sense of community and to encourage student engagement respectively in the Faculty of Engineering Sciences activities and in Management. We hope that the transition to study for MSc students will be enhanced by the presence of these graduates who have recently been through the same experience and will be able to offer support and encouragement during the settling in process. All posts will report to a Senior Academic in the department while a member of staff in each department will be there to provide support an guidance. The Peer Advisors will provide monthly reports on progress and meet with the Transition to Living and Learning Project team as appropriate.

The first event where the Engineering and the Environment Peer Advisors will get involved will be the Faculty International Student Welcome on Friday 23rd of September. The Welcome will include a buffet lunch at 13.00 (Foyer and Room 2003 bldg 7), a tour of the facilities, introductions  followed by a panel discussion from 15.00-16.30 room (Lecture Theatre A, bldg 7). The day will end with tea and coffee from 16.00-16.30 (Foyer and Room 2003, building 7) offering the students and opportunity to mingle and socialise with peers.

The Management Peer Advisors instead will attend a reception taking place on the 23rd of September from 14.30 to 16.00 in Garden Court organised by the Academic Unit as part of their International Welcome Week activities.
