Path to Success

On the 20th of September from 11.00am to 3.30pm in Room 1145 Bldg. 65 (Avenue Campus) 20 PhD students that have been selected to deliver a module on Academic Skills for Humanities and Social Sciences first year undergraduate students will take part to a training day where they will be able to get to know more about the module rationale and how they can support students in developing the skills necessary to succeed at University.

Following a successful pilot year in Social Sciences, where the module was run by Prof. Russell Bentley with the support of the Transition to Living and Learning Team, this year Dr. Alex Neil and Dr. Adrian Smith are looking at adapting the module concept to the needs of Humanities first year undergraduates to better support them in their transition from Sixth Form to University study.

The module will consist of five workshops delivered in between week 2 and 5 and will be run in parallel in Social Sciences and Humanities. The workshops will be delivered by Post Graduate Teaching Assistants (PGTAs) that have been recruited among the PhD students in the respective Academic Unit/Faculty. Students will also have access to a video introductory lecture on Black Board before each workshop delivered by an Academic in the department and a workbook with exercises encouraging individual self-reflection and assessment.
