Professor Paul van Gardingen FRSA

Project title:  The Ecosystem Services for Poverty Alleviation (ESPA) Programme

 1. Tell us a bit about you and your project team:

Paul van Gardingen holds a Personal Chair in International Development as well as the UNESCO Chair in International Development at the University of Edinburgh. He is currently based in the University's wholly-owned subsidiary company, Research Into Results Ltd, and he is the Director of the UK's Ecosystem Services for Poverty Alleviation (ESPA) programme, a global research programme funded by the UK's Department for International Development, the Natural Environment Research Council and Economic and Social Research Council.

As ESPA Director, Professor van Gardingen provides the academic leadership for this innovative programme.  The ESPA Directorate has the role of ensuring that the research produced by the programme is used to benefit the poor people living in low-income countries. It is responsible for the integration of projects and delivery of academic and development impact, as well as building the global community of researchers involved in ESPA.

2. Tell us a bit about your project:

The ESPA Programme is a seven year international research programme funded by the UK's Department for International Development, Natural Environment Research Council and Economic and Social Research Council.  ESPA's research is designed to provide evidence of how ecosystem services can reduce poverty and enhance well-being for the poorest people in developing countries around the world. ESPA's projects are delivered through collaborative partnerships linking the world's best researchers including specifically those in developing countries.
