Event details
TEDx comes to the University of Southampton! Theme Sustainability. Multidisciplinary Research Week 2013 event.
TEDx was created in the spirit of TED's mission, "ideas worth spreading." The program is designed to give communities, organisations and individuals the opportunity to stimulate dialogue through TED-like experiences at the local level.
We believe passionately in the power of ideas to change attitudes, lives and ultimately, the world.
At the TEDx Southampton University event, a combination of live presenters and TED videos will spark deep conversation and connections around the theme of Sustainability.
The Earth's population has reached 7 billion. By the middle of this century it will hit 8 billion. This will drive a perfect storm of rising food and energy costs; biodiversity loss; and increased migration and conflict; all under the influence of global climate change.
In one respect, development got us into this mess as we have been able to appropriate more of the Earth's resources, to the extent that our waste products and impacts are now seriously threatening our ways of life. Will sustainable development get us out of it? This isn't only a challenge of how to do more with less, but a spectrum of issues that cuts to the centre of what we want - for ourselves, the rest of humanity and the biosphere.
What is it that we want to sustain? What must we keep and what must we lose or exchange? What contributions can we make as individuals, teachers, parents, citizens?
Come and hear how our speakers answer these questions.

The event is organised by Dr James Dyke ( jd4@ecs.soton.ac.uk ).
