The University of Southampton
Sustainability Action

History

There is a vast array of world-leading expertise in sustainability within the University. My desire is to help us apply that expertise to the development of solutions to sustainability problems in the local, national and global environment.

Southampton: A Green Academy

The Sustainability Action Programme was launched in March 2011 under the name ‘Green Academy’. The Green Academy programme is a scheme run by the Higher Education Academy, in association with the Environmental Association for Universities and Colleges and the National Union of Students, to support sustainability activities across universities. The University of Southampton was one of the first eight universities in this scheme, making us a pioneer in the field of sustainability.

The University joined this pilot scheme in recognition that the university has a long history of strong engagement with sustainability, but this has been fragmented across the different disciplines. The Sustainability Action programme aims to provide a coherent strategy for sustainability practice across the University. Through connecting the existing sustainability practice and expertise across the University, and by supporting innovative practices, the programme is contributing to our goal of becoming a leader in the field of sustainability and a globally responsible university.
