Waste Wars

In a bid to increase sustainability at the University, Waste Wars sees up to 100 students each year taking part in waste audits on campus.

Waste Wars is an annual event in which staff and students' work together to calculate the recycling rate at the University. There have been a total of 8 campus audits so far, jointly organised with the Ethical and Environmental team

Next event: Wednesday 24 February. Sign up now.

The staff and students work in teams to survey our waste on campus. By getting involved with the waste audits, they make significant contributions to the way we operate our recycling on campus. The event is not only popular amongst students, but the data also attracts academic attention, and has been used to produce a large amount of research and papers.

Why are we doing it?

By highlighting the key problems areas for the team to work on, the students have a direct impact on our waste and recycling; pioneering campus-wide sustainability.  Last year, the University's waste and recycling scheme moved to a two-bin system following on from analysis of the waste wars results. This increased the recycling rates from 38% to over 70% in just four months - over and beyond our 60% goal.
