Keynote Lecture: Dhivya Puri, Alba Serna-Maza, Leo-Paul Vaurs - From Rubbish to Resource - the Circular Bio-economy

Date and Theme: 27th November 2014, 'Our Changing World'

Lecture Summary: The energy, chemical and fuels problem - There is currently a need to find alternative chemical, fuel and energy sources to fossil fuels. Fossil fuels contribute to greenhouse gas emissions, pollution and are a depleting resource. The waste problem - As the population expands and we consume more and more what are we going to do with all this waste?

This interactive lecture will show how we can solve both problems by using our waste and biological organisms to produce everything from petrol to plastics.

Keynote Lecture: Jon Adams - From Shipwrecks to Submerged Worlds: Exploring Maritime Archaeology

Date and Theme: 2nd October 2014, 'Exploring the Depths'

Lecture Summary: This interactive lecture will show how we can solve both problems by using our waste and biological organisms to produce everything from petrol to plastics. About 71% of the earths surface is covered with water. Yet how much do we know about what's hidden in the depths? Drawing on the expertise of the staff and students of the Centre of Maritime Archaeology at the University of Southampton, we'll be discussing topics such as; the impact of changing sea-levels on the geography of our planet and the legacy they have left behind; the development of seafaring technologies; and the emergence of globalised economies. We'll also take a look at the science and technology being data collection, from diver based research to cutting edge remote sensing techniques.

Workshop: Jennifer Durden - Garbage and the marine world

Date and Theme: 19th November 2013, 'Innovative Engineering'

This workshop will look at the affect of rubbish on the marine world - further details to follow.

Workshop: Maria Salta - Biofueling and the environment

Date and Theme: 19th November 2013, 'Innovative Engineering'

This workshop will focus on biofueling and its potential impact on the environment

Keynote Lecture: Alex Phillips - Exploring the oceans with robot submarines

Date and Theme: 7th November 2012, 'All at Sea'

Lecture Summary: The deep oceans are potentially the most dominant habitat on the planet, providing 97% of the biosphere by volume, yet scientists have explored less than 1% of the oceans seabed. Unmanned robot submarines provide an exciting way of exploring the dark world inhabited by weird creatures. The design of these vehicles is a great engineering challenge, involving a mixture of: mechanical engineering, naval architecture, fluid dynamics, electronics, software engineering and autonomy. This lecture will discuss the design principles for robotics and then describe some successful missions as well as some less successful ones.

Keynote Lecture: Edward Smith: Coral Reefs in Crisis

Date and Theme: 13th March 2012, 'Exploration and Discovery'

Lecture Summary: This lecture will discuss the design principles for robotics and then describe some successful missions as well as some less successful ones. Edward's PhD is focused on understanding the role of fluorescent proteins in corals. He uses a broad spectrum of methods ranging from molecular and physiological studies to explore the function of these proteins, to remote sensing applications allowing us to exploit this fascinating natural phenomenon.
