Data Science Seminar: Generic Big Data Processing for Advancing Situation Awareness and Decision-Support Event

The generation of heterogeneous big data sources with ever increasing volumes, velocities and veracities over the he last few years has inspired the data science and research community to address the challenge of extracting knowledge form big data. Such a wealth of generated data across the board can be intelligently exploited to advance our knowledge about our environment, public health, critical infrastructure and security. In recent years we have developed generic approaches to process such big data at multiple levels for advancing decision-support. It specifically concerns data processing with semantic harmonisation, low level fusion, analytics, knowledge modelling with high level fusion and reasoning. Such approaches will be introduced and presented in context of the TRIDEC project results on critical oil and gas industry drilling operations and also the ongoing large eVacuate project on critical crowd behaviour detection in confined spaces.

Dr Zoheir Sabeur,is Science Director at IT Innovation Centre, ECS. He graduated with a PhD in theoretical particle physics from the University of Glasgow (1990). During his PhD, he contributed in the UK Grand Challenge for investigating on the structure and transitions of hadron matter at high densities, using intensive computing on vector machines at the University of Glasgow, the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, IBM Rome and the University of San Diego, California, USA. He had various academic appointements in Computational Science at Strathclyde University, the University of Leeds and the University of Wupperthal (Germany). He also worked for 14 years at BMT Group Limited as Head of Research, where he developed the next generation of environmental information systems for the UK Oil and Gas Industry and the UK Goverment. He joined the University of Southampton, IT Innovation Centre in 2009 and has been conducting his research on big data, machine learning and high level data fusion and reasoning. Currently, he is investigating on crowd behaviour detection using computer vision methods combined with concepts of fluid flow dynamics and statistical mechanics. He is PI of several research projects concerning big data, humans unusual behaviour detection and also intelligent surveillance of large scale critical infrastructure.
