The Turing Institute's 'Researcher Spotlight' talks with Turing Fellow Pamela Ugwudike. Pamela, Associate Professor of Criminology at the University of Southampton, discusses her work studying the ethics and social implications of AI technologies when applied in justice systems to predict crime risks and determine levels of criminal justice intervention. Here is a taster of the questions put to her:

What aspect of your work is most exciting you right now?

I find the interdisciplinarity of my current projects particularly exciting, as they bring together researchers from social, computer, and data science disciplines. This makes it possible to bridge gaps between the technical and the social, demonstrating how innovative these methods can be when used to study pressing social problems.

What three words would you use to describe your work?

AI ethics, data bias, digital society.
