Over two days the Turing hosted a unique online event, AI UK, to showcase the very best of UK academic work in artificial intelligence (AI), bringing together leading thinkers, innovative businesses and specialist third sector bodies. The event included panels and presentations from expert UK academics, policy makers, and industry leaders as well as roundtable discussions, hands-on ML demonstrations, and other opportunities to chat and interact throughout the days.

Representing the University of Southampton were:

  • University of Southampton Chancellor and mental health campaigner, Ruby Wax OBE who moderated a session, 'mental health – the new UK epidemic' discussing the effect of life in lockdown and the UK’s mental health crisis, and what role AI and data science play in improving our mental health? You can watch the session here on the Turing YouTube channel.
  • Professor Dame Wendy Hall, Director of the Web Science Institute and UK AI Skills Champion, chaired a panel discussion, ‘mind the skills gap’, to consider if the skills we are cultivating today are enough to lead the UK to the future we are already committed to.
  • and Turing Fellow, Professor Mike Wald who featured in a Spotlight talk showcasing his latest work and posing the question, 'how can AI overcome barriers to inclusion?

Further video's of the above and other AI UK talks and panels will be available soon on the Turing YouTube channel.
