Event details

The 4th International Workshop on Disaster Management contributes to the ongoing collaborations between the University of Southampton and KAIST, South Korea. Over the last 5 years we have had a series of successful research exchanges, enabling students to work on interesting projects within a multi-institutional team. As part of the activities, we will be conducting a 3-day Datathon to explore some challenges around data mining, analysis, and visualisation. This year the Datathon focuses on the analysis of various Web data containing online newspaper articles. Working in teams, you will explore how to use a selection of different data sources from news reporting services in order to build a knowledge base for supporting the discovery of urban disaster. Given a selection of unstructured datasets which contain news articles from different newspapers within the UK, you will design and develop a system which can perform one or more tasks, such as context extraction, entity resolution, and syntactic and semantic matching.
