Public transport: Bus, Coach, Train and Ferry

The University is well connected by public transport services, with bus routes between all of our campuses and direct links to railway stations.

Discounted bus tickets for Unilink services are available to all University of Southampton staff and students.

Coach Services

National Express run services to Winchester, London and the London Airports from Burgess Road.

Southampton and Winchester are well served by mainline railway stations - Southampton Central and Southampton Airport Parkway and Winchester.

  • The average journey time to London Waterloo from Southampton Central is 1 hour 30 minutes
  • The average journey time to London Waterloo from Winchester is 1 hour 10 minutes

The Uni-link U1 bus services connect our campus locations with Southampton Airport Parkway and Southampton Central stations, whilst the Winchester campus is a 15 minute walk from the train station.

CrossCountry trains run direct trains to Southampton and are available throughout Britain with discounted tickets available when you book online in advance.

Local stations

Swaythling and St Denys stations are approximately a 20 minute walk from the Highfield campus. The University is a member of the Three Rivers Rail Partnership which seeks to develop the use of local stations.

 

Red Funnel provides regular ferry connections between Southampton and the Isle of Wight. Bus connections are available at each end of the journey (operated by Southern Vectis on the Island, and by Uni-link or Bluestar on the mainland).

 

The Hythe Ferry provides regular connections between Southampton and Hythe.
