The University of Southampton
Working as a Researcher

Each of the University’s five Faculties has a Concordat Champion to support research staff and who works with research staff representatives, articulates issues and coordinates career and professional development events.

Faculty of Arts & Humanities (FAH)

Dr Alison Gascoigne is the Concordat Champion for FAH.  She works with research staff representatives to coordinate events and socials, and meets with research staff in person.

Faculty of Engineering & Physical Sciences (FEPS)

FEPS is our largest Faculty, with over 400 research only staff.  The Faculty has Concordat leads in each School, and Dr Alan McAlpine is the Concordat Champion for FEPS.

FEPS has school level and Faculty level research and training events – details are held on the Research Careers Support website.

Faculty of Environmental & Life Sciences (FELS)

Dr Mark Chapman is the Concordat Champion for FELS.  He works closely with ECR reps from each school – together they organise an annual conference, training events and the Dean’s prize.

Faculty of Medicine (FoM)

Medicine has a Postdoc Association and committee with ECR representatives.  Professor Delphine Boche chairs the committee and is also the Concordat Champion for FoM.  The Faculty holds an Annual Christmas lecture, has Research Clubs, offers Dean’s prizes for outstanding contributions of researchers and also introduced one for PIs. There is an extensive professional development programme and mentoring scheme.

Details of the professional development programme for research staff are held on the Sharepoint site.

Faculty of Social Sciences (FSS)

Dr Anita Lavorgna was recently appointed as Concordat Champion in FSS and was previously the ECR representative on the Faculty Research Committee.

I’d already decided to apply for the British Academy Fellowship before attending this session, but it gave me a much clearer understanding of the process. I also received information about ways to get helpful feedback and support, for example, the Peer Review system at Southampton
