The University of Southampton

Freshers and the Students’ Union

When you come to the University, you automatically become a member of the Students’ Union. Independent from the University, the Students’ Union is run by students for students and exists to make your student experience unforgettable. They are also the official organiser of Freshers’ events. Don’t be fooled by external promoters.

From Malaysia to the National Oceanography Centre (NOC), the Union is here to represent you no matter where you study. With services in Southampton and Winchester, it couldn’t be easier to access everything they do.

The Union is one of the biggest Students’ Union in the country and is here to unlock the potential and enrich the life of every student.

Freshers' – Fighting ‘fake news’

Every year, fake Facebook pages and events start appearing claiming to be Freshers’ promoters. The Students’ Union is the only official organiser of the Welcome Freshers’ programme so watch out for fake groups and wristbands that are promoted or sold online. External promoters are not official organisers and you could lose money by joining those unofficial events. Promoters want to sell tickets to overpriced events – you can go to those clubs throughout the year and you will get a very similar experience.

The Students’ Union is a registered charity and the money spent at the Union is reinvested into the Union for the benefit of all University of Southampton students (i.e. funding for sports clubs and societies etc.) so you know where your money is going! The Union offers high quality events on and outside of the campus, including Freshers’ Ball, Welcome Parties, and a wide range of club nights and chill nights. Visit the Students' Union website for latest updates.
