Global Futures Speaker Series - Carmen Malvar Event

Abstract:

The aim of this lecture is to share information about work developed in Oaxaca, Mexico, where Carmen is working towards a sustainable model from the environmental, social and economic point of view based on a dialogue with different communities' artisan approaches, developing design strategies during the process. The research will expand on points that should generate the route of a virtual map, a sharable hybrid space. Therefore technology and social media are an essential part of the work presented. CADA uses design from a local perspective to achieve global impact.

Bio:

Carmen Malvar is a PhD Candidate at Winchester School of Art, University of Southampton. She is the Director of the Masters Programme in Retail Design at the Escola Elisava in Barcelona, Spain and Visiting Professor and Research Fellow at the Center for Sustainable Design, Pratt Institute, USA. Carmen is the Director of the CADA project. Her experience comes from working with many European global brands, designing and consulting for them. Since her early years after graduating from Architecture at Pratt Institute, she worked as a designer on many large-scale projects. Her vision of global design is broad and conscious. She widens her experience through teaching in Spain, Latin America and USA about such varied topics as globalization through design, international expansion strategies and trend and consumption analysis. Carmen lives and works between New York, Barcelona and Oaxaca.
