Anthrobscene: An Alternative Deep Time of the Media
This talk will address the notion of "deep time" as developed by the German media theorist Siegfried Zielinski in the context of media arts. He understands deep times as ways to dig into the long term histories of media, art and science interaction. But besides Zielinski's deep times, I want to argue we need to focus on more literal deep times: the geological and geophysical underpinning of modern technical media from metals and minerals to energy. It is in this context that this topic of "geology of media" resonates with the recent much discussed concept of the Anthropocene, a speculated new geological era that we humans have inaugurated, but I want to add an additional twist and talk about the Anthropobscene: the obscenities of systematic environmental exploitation mobilized by the corporate technological apparatuses.
