Liberty launch for WSA students' scarf designs

Charity scarves designed by textile students from the University of Southampton's Winchester School of Art have been launched at the prestigious scarf hall at Liberty department store in London. International conservation charity The World Land Trust collaborated with Liberty and WSA on a competition to find the winning designs. World-famous model Lily Cole has also backed it with a photo-shoot to promote them.

The students' brief was to design a scarf inspired by WLT projects to go on sale in Liberty's illustrious central atrium. A judging panel of artists and accessory experts including; Vogue's Senior Fashion Assistant Tammy Tinker, the Head of Buying at Liberty Alex Stylianidis, prominent shoe designer Michael Lewis, celebrated wildlife artist and WLT trustee Bruce Pearson, and jewellery designer Dominic Jones.

The panel was asked to select five winning designs from fourteen finalists at Winchester School of Art. After much deliberation, the judges named the winners as Evelyn Males Echeverria, Phoebe Farrell, Freya Perrett and Lauren Dunbar - who won in two categories.

The five designs went into production and were launched at the store on 11 May 2011. All profits made from the sales will be donated to the World Land Trust to save endangered habitats all over the world.

Print success at London Fashion Week

Freya Perrett, Print Textile Design student at Winchester School of Art, has created a print for shoes designed by Michael Lewis, a New Generation shoe designer who has worked for Gucci, Louis Vuitton and Burberry, among others, and is currently design director of men's and women's shoes at Versace.

Freya was a finalist in the recent Liberty Scarf Competition, when WSA textile students designed scarves to be sold to raise funds for the World Land Trust. Michael Lewis was one of the VIP designers on the final selection panel at Liberty in December 2010 and after seeing Freya's work at the presentation, he asked her to design a print for his shoes.

The shoes were launched at London Fashion week, where they had a great response, and they will be shown at Paris Fashion Week this week.

Dalian Polytechnic University

We are opening the doors to an exciting new Art School in Dalian, China. Students will be taught in Chinese and English and some of the most successful and hardworking students will have the opportunity to study at Winchester itself.

The Art School in Dalian will provide two main programmes, Fashion and Textile Design and Graphic Arts. These programmes have received Chinese central government education ministry approval and now we are recruiting the most talented students to study with us. The qualification will be recognised by both countries and will be issued by both universities.

In the Loop - Knitting culture and Research

www.soton.ac.uk/intheloop

In the loop encompasses knitting research and culture, hosting internal conferences covering topics that include knitting methodologies, artistic knitting boundaries, historical knitting, narratives, culture and fashion.

Knitting resources are housed in the WSA library; one of five site libraries comprising the University of Southampton Library. Specialising in Art and Design it actively supports learning, teaching and research. One of its strengths is the focus on textiles, textile art, fashion and dress history. The libraries collections have been significantly enriched by the addition of three distinctive knitting collections acquired from renowned practitioners and scholars in the field.
