David Teager-Portman is the Specialist Sculpture Technician at Winchester School of Art in charge of the Foundry, Casting Workshop, Metal Workshop, Wood Workshop, 3D Production Suite and Sculpture Yard.

David’s personal practice looks at the mercurial and quasi-allegorical within figurative sculpture, working mainly in bronze, plaster and stone. He is a Royal College of Art alumni and has been involved in technical education working for The Worshipful Company of Founders. David has previously been a visiting lecturer at Newcastle University, Camberwell College of Art, London College of Communication and Chelsea College of Art.

Outside of academic work David has previously worked as a specialist bronze artisan for several large commercial bronze foundries, producing work for internationally known artists and designers.

David is a former UAL Research Fellow, during his tenure he was awarded The Gilbert Bayes Scholarship Award, Making Ways Visual Arts Award and Museums Sheffield Media Commission Award. He is currently writing a book about alternative bronze working.

His research within his own practice is concerned with the imbuement of story and performance in sculpture, contemporary integration of archaic processes and making within sculpture, experimental metallurgy and colouring of copper alloys.

David work has been exhibited widely, including exhibitions with the Saatchi Gallery, Turner Contemporary Margate, The Royal Academy, Edinburgh Sculpture Court, The Wilson Gallery, Gloucester Cathedral and the Royal College of Music. He has work in private collections in the UK and Europe and a piece of public sculpture in central London.

David has been included in several national level prizes including being twice selected for the Saatchi Gallery New Sensations, The Threadneedle Prize and the Coutts Sculpture Prize.
