New head for Winchester School of Art

Winchester School of Art, University of Southampton, has appointed a new head of school.

Professor Bashir Makhoul, currently Professor of Art and Design at the University of Luton, will take up post on 21 February 2005. Professor Makhoul has been Head of the Department and Director of the Research Institute of Media, Art and Design at the University of Luton since 2002. He was previously Head of Research degrees and course leader for the MA in Art and Design at Sheffield Hallam University. He was also a lecturer and post-doctoral research fellow at Liverpool John Moores University.

Professor Makhoul holds Bachelors and Masters degrees in Fine Art, and was awarded a Doctorate from Manchester Metropolitan University in 1995 for his thesis on Contemporary Palestinian Art. Professor Makhoul is a working artist and has exhibited widely both in this country and overseas, including Australia, Israel, Jordan, and Pakistan.
