New Natives: Graphic Arts 2013 London exhibition showcases students’ talents

Published: 2 July 2013

Following success at the 2013 BA Degree Show, work by Winchester School of Art Graphic Arts students has been on display in London’s East End – the hub of the capital’s creative industries. The fifth BA Graphic Arts London show, New Natives, took place at The Gallery in Shoreditch from 27-30 June. The show attracted large numbers of visitors who viewed innovative works from the four BA Graphic Arts pathways – Graphic Design, Illustration, Photography and Motion Graphics.

Once again, this year’s show was produced in partnership with Recuperate, a resource founded by two Winchester School of Art Graphic Arts alumni, Blue Bushell and Simon Holmes, both of whom are now successful art directors working with leading London advertising agencies.

Recuperate held two 12-hour workshops with the third-year students and met them individually to discuss their work. The students then worked with Recuperate to develop previous sketchbook ideas into pieces for the show. As well as featuring in the exhibition, the students' work was collated into a stunning 70-page book produced by Recuperate. The whole process was documented and captured on the show's website newnatives.eu, which uploads any image sent to Instagram containing the hashtag newnatives2013.

"The students produced challenging work and all four Graphic Arts pathways were active on the project," says Tim Metcalfe, Programme Leader for BA Graphic Arts. "The collaborative approach to making work was a real success."

Students’ work will also go on show at New Blood, an annual exhibition run by creative industry organisation D&AD which brings together the best graduating talent from across the UK. New Blood takes place on 3-4 July at Old Spitalfields Market, London.
