Students from across the University are involved in a project to build a satellite to be launched into space, and two former students from WSA have taken this as inspiration for new works.

The University of Southampton Small Satellite (UoS3) is one of just six projects chosen by ESA to receive expert support and access to test facilities, as part of its educational Fly Your Satellite! programme.

In the project, students from various parts of the university have worked together to create a device which, once launched into an orbit 400km above the Earth's surface, will spend a year gathering data that will be used to improve re-entry predictions for space objects.

The satellite - which measures just 10cm on a side - has also formed the basis of artwork created by George Thom, who graduated from the BA Fine Art at WSA in 2015. Another former Art student, Kayleigh Sharp, has also written a poem inspired by the satellite.

You can find out more about the project, and read Kayleigh's poem, on the dedicated website at http://uos3.space/artwork.html
