Sense and Sensibility: MA Contemporary Curation, Degree show. 1-6 September 2017
A global cohort of 21 students, working in five curatorial teams, have responded to the title of 'Sense and Sensibility', in reference to Jane Austen’s cherished 1811 novel of the same name. Austen was local to Winchester and it is here where she spent her last days. In recognition of 2017 marking the 200th year anniversary of the author’s death, this exhibition examines the same binary notions as Austen’s classic novel.

Beyond the title, the exhibitions display an interpretation of ‘sense and sensibility’: the relationship of the two opposing words and their various inferences. The exhibitions may, but do not necessarily, reference Austen’s text further. The theme evokes discourse between that which is logical, rational, and considered (sense), and that which is illogical, emotive, and instinctive (sensibility). Ambitiously and broadly interpreted, each exhibition deals with these concepts in their relation to contemporary culture and art, and the practice of contemporary curating.
There are five exhibitions across The Winchester Gallery and University’s painting studio:
Body and Mind – Drawing on the work of philosophers such as Kant and Descartes, Body and Mind explores notions of human existence, the relationship between the body and mind, thought and action, and artist and their work. The contemporary work on display has an intrinsic and emotive relationship to the process of its creation. To accompany this exhibition there will be a Contact Improvisation dance demonstration at Winchester School of Art on 1 September.
Sugar and Spice – This exhibition is stimulated by contemporary discourse surrounding representations of women, and inspired by Austen’s significant impact on both literature and culture, and in turn her construction of complex female characters – lacking in a world which was dominated and dictated by men. Sugar and Spice showcases young female artists whose work deals with taking back control over the image, and ideals of what it is to be a woman.
Sense and Sensibility: Aesthetic (Im)materiality questions how art is experienced, and how emotive responses might be stimulated by the senses. In the light of immateriality (digital) becoming an everyday norm, people inevitably crave for the aesthetic responsiveness (sensibility) of an object of physicality and tangibility. This is a display which desires to literally play with the senses; the work on show invite visitors to interact with them.
Sense and Sensibility: Yin and Yang Working from the Chinese philosophy of yin and yang, two contrasting sides to the human brain which represent logic and emotion, or sense and sensibility, this exhibition displays work of art by local and international artists who create their work in either a system of logic or emotion, such as geometric patterns and evocative paint. Digital Insights of 20th Century Painting tracks the evolution of iconic painting practice through the use of digital technology, through the work of painters from all over the world: Africa, Asia; Latin America; North America; Oceania; Europe. This process gives insights into the development of an individual’s practice through close analysis and magnificent visuals.
