Welcome to our new range of art and design short courses for summer 2012. We have put together a diverse range of subjects for you to try, spanning all of our practice-based programmes at the School.

AN INTRODUCTION TO CERAMICS

Description
The course gives participants the opportunity to explore their creativity through the medium of contemporary ceramics. You will be introduced to a range of basic ceramic techniques including coiling, pinching, slabbing and taught how to make push moulds and 2 part clay slip moulds. You will be encouraged to explore and develop your own ideas and designs and will produce a range of finished ceramic pieces by the end of the five-day course.

Description
Suitable for all levels this course includes hand embroidery and beading with a twist
as the instructor is well versed in traditional Chinese embroidery techniques for the
fashion industry. The undergraduate fashion students at Winchester School of
Art have used these techniques in their collections. The techniques taught are suitable for use in fashion, embroidery or quilting projects. All materials provided.

Tuesday morning: Portraiture introduction slide show & techniques.

Wednesday afternoon: Landscape photo-shoot in nature reserve.
Thursday morning: Still Life introduction slide show & techniques.

Friday morning: Basic file management and work flow and editing; Bridge & Photoshop.

AN INTRODUCTION TO
WOVEN TEXTILES

Description
The course will introduce you to basic weave structures and hand weaving techniques used to create experimental and introductory woven textile samples. You will be encouraged to express your creativity using handlooms and will be encouraged to gain an understanding of the properties of yarns in weave design and structure. All students will be provided with an individual handloom.

‘TRACES OF AN ACTION’

Description
This 5 day intensive course is designed to introduce students to different elements
of contemporary print-making. The course will introduce traditional techniques including monoprinting, drypoint and linocuts, and combine these with high-end digital approaches in an attempt to define a contemporary field of enquiry.

Description
This experimental fabric manipulation course offers you an opportunity to create
a series of samples, which you can then develop for use in fashion, embroidery or
quilting projects. During the course you will explore ways in which to create pattern and texture by using a range of materials and a variety of stitching, folding and printing techniques. All materials provided.

Description
How to produce high quality images with fantastic detail in the shortest amount of
time, using Photoshop CS5, This course will help you learn the most efficient ways to
perform common editing tasks, including noise reduction, shadow and highlight detail recovery, retouching, and combining multiple images. Tips on non-destructive
editing, Camera Raw, layers, adjustment layers, blending modes, layer masks, and
much more. Exercise files are included.

Learn core concepts and techniques that apply to any workflow in Illustrator. This course includes a detailed explanation of the elements that make up vector graphics—paths, strokes, and fills—and shows how to use Illustrator’s drawing tools. Also demonstrated are techniques for combining and cleaning up paths, organizing paths into groups and layers, text editing, working with colour, effects, and much more. Exercise files accompany the course.
