Eda Sancakdar Onikinci is a Postgraduate research student at Winchester School of Art, University of Southampton.

I completed my BA in Communication and Design at Bilkent University in 2007. My undergraduate research primarily focused on the relationship between “false memory” and photography and how it operated in family albums. After graduating, I worked as a photographer for three years and completed my MFA in Visual Communication and Design at Istanbul Bilgi University where from 2011 to 2017 I was also a lecturer in the Department of Film. My teaching included theoretical and practical courses on the representation of the face and the body and the relationship between the spectator and the screen.

Research interests

My interests include nineteenth century visual culture, early cinema, histories of photography, visual representation of the face, and construction and visualisation of personal memory through archives.

My current PhD project is entitled (Un)veiling the feminine: Photographic (in)visibility in the nineteenth century photographs of the veiled women , where I investigate the overlooked history of photographic representation of Ottoman/Muslim women. Exploring both official, commercial and medical photographic archives, the research focuses on how photographic camera altered the definition of the “feminine”, by rendering female face and body (in)visible through discursive photographic, sartorial, religious and medical practices.
