Mr Jason Kass is Research Postgraduate Student within Winchester School of Art at the University of Southampton.

I am currently in the final year of my doctoral research, joint-supervised within Winchester School of Art and the University’s School of Psychology.

My doctoral thesis considers the application of knowledge from cognitive psychology (i.e. visual cognition) towards understanding art spectatorship. The basic premise is that we can speculate about a viewer’s experience of individual artworks by studying the artworks in relation to perceptual and cognitive processes.

The research is part of a collaborative project titled Modes of Address in Pictorial Art (MoA), which investigates historical and theoretical notions of pictorial modes of address alongside psychological explorations of art spectatorship. The project's aim is to contribute to the development and exchange of ideas within experimental psychology, art practice and art theory.
