Research project: Glam! The Performance of Style

Through the Winchester Centre for Global Futures in Art, Design and Media's Partnership with Tate Liverpool, researchers contributed to the 2013 exhibition Glam! The Performance of Style.

Glam! The Performance of Style (8 February - 12 May 2013) was the first exhibition to explore glam style and sensibility in depth. The exhibition investigated artistic developments in Britain, Europe and North America through the prism of glam, examining painting, sculpture, installation art, film, photography and performance.

The Winchester School of Art's Professor Jonathan Harris and Dr August Davis translated their socio-historical analysis of 1970s art into a timeline that was fully reproduced in the exhibition catalogue.

WSA researchers designed the exhibition's 'glamscapes' - walls of visual material (e.g. record covers, magazines, etc) identified in their research as 'revealing how fine art ideas fed through to the front-face of popular culture'.

Jonathan Faiers, Reader in Fashion and Textiles, and John Hopkins, Senior Lecturer, investigated the relationship between art (e.g. Hockney), fashion and style; Harris and Davis developed a critical history of 1970s visual art, linking elements of social, cultural and artistic change; and Oliver Peterson Gilbert, PhD Student (2012-present) produced exhibition-linked outreach and learning events.

WSA research was further disseminated to the public through Glam!'s wide national coverage as well as in extensive international media exposure.

Professor Harris chaired Glamorama! - a Tate event which featured Faiers in a panel discussion on the impact of glam on popular culture.

And a series of learning events took place for fifteen to twenty-five year olds called Glam! and the 21st Century Factory.
