The Web Science Institute (WSI) and Centre for Doctoral Training collaborate with industry, government and other organisations on a wide range of activities that focus on key research areas and our students’ academic and professional development. Our partners engage with the CDT in a number of ways, such as training, sponsorship, strategic input and in-kind contributions.

Collaborative activities

The following are examples of activities that the CDT runs in collaboration with partners from corporate, public and third sector organisations. You can find details of recent and forthcoming CDT events on our Events page.

Studentships
Individual PhD projects can be proposed by partner organisations, led by academic staff and supervised jointly. The funding covers stipend and fees.

Industry placements
Students may undertake a full or part-time internship at an external organisation at any point during their studies. You can read more about some of the internships our students have undertaken here.

Guest lectures
These are specialist keynote sessions, seminars or workshops featuring a topic relevant to Web Science.

Research sandpits
Groups of students and academics engage with industry-relevant problems raised by partners, and over a period of a week or a month they deliver insights against the initial brief.

Pilot projects
Partner organisations may run small scale pilot projects which involve our students carrying out research or implementing activities to deliver outcomes.

Advisory Board
The CDT’s Advisory Board aims to provide a strategic overview and comprises the CDT Management team, representatives from partner organisations, the EPSRC and the student body.

Sponsorship opportunities
The CDT welcomes any support in the form of sponsored events and operational activities, for example sponsored prizes, training packages, or co-funding a one-day event, mini-conference or research visit.
