Gefion Thuermer - Government and Democracy

Gefion Thuermer

Gefion has been using the skills developed in her PhD to explore the effect of online participation behaviour in members of political parties. She has been working with the Green Party, in Germany, to understand more about the tools they introduce to engage their members – how they are  adopted, who adopts them, and more importantly who doesn’t use them.

She said: “What is great about my work with the party is that I have a direct  feedback channel for my results. I can see the impact my research is having. This is extremely rewarding and a great validation of the  importance of the work I am doing. “My results will not only be important to the  Green Party, but the themes and problems I identify will be relevant to any party or organisation that aims to use online participation tools in a  democratic context.”

Since completing her PhD, Gefion now works at the University of Southampton on the Data Pitch project which is based in the Electronics and Computer Science (ECS) department, and the Web and Internet Science research group (WAIS).
