The Web Science Institute has been granted a Research Collaboration Stimulus Fund for 2017/18. This is funded from the Higher Education Innovation Fund (HEIF) to stimulate interactions with government, industry and other users of University research and to pump-prime research initiatives that will lead to much larger grant and contract proposals for 2018/19.

The WSI is seeking research proposals that focus on both social and technical aspects of the Web, its many diverse technologies, applications and everyday practices. In this call we particularly welcome applications that involve established or potential collaboration with Southampton businesses, public services and the third sector, although we welcome all applications with strong external partnerships. The intention is to work towards applied and commercial applications of the knowledge created in the course of research.

The Research Collaboration Stimulus Fund will pump prime research projects that fulfil the following criteria:

  • Address contemporary sociotechnical challenges
  • Draw appropriately on interdisciplinary expertise
  • Provide scope for larger collaborative major research initiatives in the field of Web Science
  • Appeal to external partners as a future commercial opportunity and/or practical application will be favoured

At this stage the WSI is seeking an executive/abstract summary of the research initiative seeking funding. The summary should be one A4 page long and include the title of the project, names of investigators, breakdown of requested resources(this may be up to £25,000, although it is not expected that all bids will be of this size), expected start date (please note that all allocated Stimulus Funds must be spent by 31 July 2018), and an indication of established and potential external partners that would be required.

Applications may be made from staff in any Faculty at the University of Southampton.

Applications should be 12pt font and 2cm page margins. Please submit applications electronically in PDF format to Jane.Morgan@soton.ac.uk by 5pm on 6 September 2017.

We are very happy to provide advice on the applications process, on building interdisciplinary networks, and on relationships with external partners as required. Please contact Jane Morgan in the first instance Jane.Morgan@soton.ac.uk.

All applicants will be notified of the outcome of their proposal in early September. Successful applicants will be invited to provide further detail on their proposal.
