We are inviting applications now for our 2018 intake. The Web Science Centre for Doctoral Training at Southampton is looking for the best and brightest students. The award is open to all disciplines and we currently have PhD students from many different disciplines: Computer Science, Law, Sociology, Music, Languages, Geography, Politics, Education and more.

The Web is a foundational technology that supports a mobile infrastructure of social networks and big data services, powering the emerging digital economy. Web Science explores the impact of the Web on all aspects of human society, from the individual right through to national and global scales, on the one hand investigating the technical capabilities of its distributed information infrastructure and on the other scrutinising the public policy and social practices that have made it a transformative global phenomenon.

The Web Science Centre for Doctoral Training at the University of Southampton is world leading and represents a new approach to training PhD students. As well as the full scholarship and no fees, you will benefit from working within two faculties. You will be working closely with a supervisor from your chosen discipline and from web science. Additionally, we aim to support you with a range of professional development opportunities and give you the opportunity to develop links with our Industry partners. We network, not only through the University of Southampton, but also with other Centres for Doctoral Training in the UK and with our partner research laboratories throughout the world offering you summer schools and opportunities to work with PhD students from our global network of web science laboratories.

You should expect to get a first class degree or 2:1 in your discipline to be considered for a studentship.

Studentships are open to UK and EU students. A tax-free bursary of £14,553 (2017/18) per annum and payment of tuition fees is available for UK students only (EU nationals are eligible for fees-only awards if they do not have settled status in the UK).
