The Web Science Centre for Doctoral Training held an Induction event on Monday 24 September to welcome the 2018 cohort of new students to the 4 year integrated Web Science iPhD programme.

Dr Mark Weal and Professor Susan Halford, CDT Directors, showcased key CDT activities during 2017-18, which were presented by current students. These included summer schools in St Petersburg and Hannover; a PhD symposium at the WebSci’18 Conference in Amsterdam; research trips to Antigua, China and Singapore; Cabinet Office internships; a GDPR and e-Privacy one day conference; and public engagement events at the Farnborough Air Show and BBC Countryfile Live.

This was followed by an afternoon of 'mindreading' activities delivered by invited guest, Stuart Nolan. Stuart is speaker, writer, consultant and performer who  is currently undertaking a challenge to train 1000 new mindreaders over the course of a year. He also talked about some of his work which includes robotics and computer vision to determine emotion and personality, fortune telling A.I., emerging mindreading neurotech and ethical issues of using Big Data to predict personalities and actions.
