Run in tandem with the WSTNet Web Science Summer School, AIFS Week 2019 offered PhD students the opportunity to participate in day sessions on the key topics of Digital Futures, Machine Learning and Deep Learning, Ethics for Researchers, and the Future of AI.

A total of 30 students from four Faculties attended the sessions, which included keynote talks from Professor Susan Halford (University of Bristol), JP Rangaswami (Web Science Trust) and Professor Dame Wendy Hall (University of Southampton) in addition to a tutorial on Machine Learning, lectures on Ethics and AI, and the Future of Biometrics, and a workshop on how to advise and brief an audience of non-experts.

WSI research in AI builds on long-standing expertise in Web Science and Data Science. We aim to train multidisciplinary doctoral researchers in developing cutting-edge AI techniques, in deploying AI in innovative solutions to complex social problems, and in managing the disruptive effects of AI on social infrastructure.
