Dstl hosts Web Science Cohort Conference

This year’s CDT annual Cohort Conference took place at the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) in Portsdown West, hosted by Maire Byrne, a CDT alumna, now employed at Dstl.

Our current second year PhD students gave presentations and displayed posters about their latest research.  All CDT students are supervised by an interdisciplinary team of academic staff.  This year, the presenters’ research interests spanned Computer Science, Education, Criminology, Politics, Sociology, Design, History, Law, ISVR and Modern Languages. 

Their current PhD topics are: 

  • How young teens conceptualise social media
  • Devising an online physical activity intervention for young adults with visual impairment
  • The politics of memory on the Web
  • Optimising Automatic Speech Recognition with 3D Face-mapping
  • Designing a Better Internet of Things
  • Detecting Cultural Violence using natural language processing
  • Utilising Far-Right Pre-Attack Manifestos to Support a New and Universal Definition of Extremism
  • The World White Web: A Socio-Technical Analysis of Online Right-Wing Radicalisation
  • Quantum Network Futures: global security challenges of the quantum tech arms race
