Event details

You are invited to join us for Introductions, Keynote Presentations, lunch and a Government Panel Session at Boldrewood Campus.

There will be around 20-25 participants from the Cabinet Office, the Government Digital Service, the Department for Business, Enterprise & Industrial Strategy, and the Department for Communities & Local Government, among others.

The purpose of the day is to showcase our research expertise and current research activities, and discuss with Government representatives how we can work more closely with them to deliver their objectives. For that reason, it is focused around the needs of Government in the area of digital. These include ensuring access to digital skills, developing new opportunities for new digital businesses (and for all companies to benefit from digital), ensuring a safe cyberspace, and unlocking the power of data. It also includes helping Government itself transform its own services to serve citizens online. More details on Government plans can be found in the UK Digital Strategy, published in March 2017.

The event will take place on the Boldrewood Campus. It begins with a welcome from the Vice Chancellor Sir Christopher Snowden at 12 noon, and finishes at 5:00pm. University staff and students are very welcome to attend the introductory talks, the networking lunch and demonstrations, the Keynote presentation and the Government panel session. The Keynote will be presented by Professor Dame Wendy Hall on the subject of her Artificial Intelligence Review, and the Government panel session will include representatives from different Government departments discussing their needs over the coming years and how universities like Southampton can feed into that.

If you wish to attend any of the Breakout Sessions, please check availability of space in advance by contacting Lisa Harris (l.j.harris@soton.ac.uk). These workshops are designed for small groups and we need to manage the numbers carefully.
