Event details
Each year the WSTNet Web Science Summer School (WWSSS) aims to offer participants the opportunity to enhance their knowledge and experience in the core subjects of Web Science. WWSSS is non-profit and participation fees are kept at a minimum to allow students from all over the world and diverse backgrounds to participate.
Web Science and AI for Future Society
Web Science is the study of people and technologies, applications, processes and practices that shape and are shaped by the World Wide Web, the largest socio-technical infrastructure in human history. Researchers in Web Science draw together theories, methods and findings from across academic disciplines, and collaborate with industry, business, government and civil society in order to develop our knowledge and understanding of the Web.
AI and emerging technologies offer breakthroughs in data gathering and analytical capabilities that stand to disrupt businesses, industrial practices and social behaviour in positive and negative ways. However, established norms of trust and ethics are already limiting the availability of useful data for the AI industry. In addition, reliance on current data management systems and IT practices damage our ability to exploit the breakthroughs in AI. The technical data science pipelines that we currently use will cripple the AI industry unless we learn to understand the social context of data along with its limitations and the cultural, social and physical dimensions of the challenges that it is being used to address.
Why Attend?
To broaden your understanding of the Web, whatever your academic discipline
Understanding the Web is relevant to all disciplines. The Web is the largest human information construct and touches almost any area of modern societies. Understanding the relations between the technical, social, economic and cultural aspects of the Web requires a base knowledge in these areas and an active exchange of people from different disciplines in this field.
To hear the latest from domain experts
The speakers are renowned experts in their field with many years’ experience in teaching, research or industry, and belong to a broad global network that shapes the discipline of Web Science.
To share insights with fellow researchers
The WSTNet Summer Schools provide an annual opportunity to get together with other researchers and professionals to share knowledge and communicate.
To enhance your skills and knowledge
The interactive programme, mentoring and groupwork provide ample opportunity to enhance your skills and learn from others
