Making a Web of Arts

This project investigates the conceptual and practical development of a ‘Web of Arts’, i.e an arts-based repository infrastructure to complement the Web of Science. This proposal connects directly to a current, sector-wide undertaking (supported by Research England and AHRC), and, crucially, provides key engagement from computing science to enable this sector-wide initiative to extend its programme of research and fulfil its wider ambitions. Critically, this will include both Winchester School of Art and Web Science at University Southampton within the wider consortium so further the sector dialogue.

The project is conducted through two main methods: (1) interdisciplinary expert seminars; and (2) experimental computing design, to interlace with the expert debates, so enabling a two-way process of thinking (and making) to genuinely progress the conceptual ideas for a Web of Arts through speculative design and prototyping.

The project builds upon significant work currently underway and initiated by a national group of practice research leaders who have long been concerned at the lack of visibility and discoverability of all forms of practice research, through RAE/REF cycles and through Research Council leadership.
