Can NGOs help Cambodian youth in self-expression and creativity?

Overview

Writing Through is a charitable organisation registered in the US that aims to develop thinking ability, language fluency and self-esteem through creative writing workshops among marginalized and at-risk populations around the world, particularly in Cambodia. There is strong anecdotal evidence that these workshops are beneficial for the students in boosting their academic performance, language skills, creativity, self-esteem and confidence. Nevertheless, this evidence is qualitative, highly subjective, and hard to gather. The goal of this project is to provide the NGO with a relatively simple evaluation tool that we have previously developed at University of Southampton.

This tool uses basic text mining technology to quantify the changes in language skills and creativity of each student based on analysing texts written by a large group of students. With this, the NGO will be able to design experiments to test the success of their programs and eventually design better ones.
